Have you ever wondered how lawn mowing companies make those ball park lines? It has everything to do with technique . Like anything, the more lawn mowing you do the better you get and I can provide this type of look for your lawn.
First we need to understand the importance of how to care for a lawn correctly. There are several key factors in maintaining a healthy lawn throughout the cutting season. Utilizing proper practices, I can make your lawn the best looking lawn on the street.
Cutting Height
Many people do not know that cutting height is the single most important factor to a healthy lawn. The proper height setting for cutting will reflect that a mere 1/3 of the height of the grass has been cut. It is not a good idea to let the grass grow too long in between cuttings. Therefore, in the spring when the grass is growing fast it will need to be cut at least weekly. In the dry and hot summer months, however, the grass should be cut less often as well as cut higher. Taller grass is more drought resistant than short cut grass. Cutting in drought conditions is very bad for the grass.
Lawn Mower Blades
Did you know that dull mower blades will actually 'rip' the grass blades instead of cutting them? This damages the grass, causing stress, browning and it also promotes disease. Some landscape companies will sharpen their cutting blades on a set schedule once per week or even less often, even if they become dull the day after they are sharpened. I sharpen my blades as needed to keep them razor sharp at all times.
Trimming
I consider this to be one of the most important part of a lawn mowing, like the icing on the cake. Trimming is needed in the areas the lawn mower could not reach, such as around, under and between trees or around obstacles. Along curb lines, driveway and walkway edges, and landscape beds I like to see a nice clean vertical edge, not the angled 'scalped' edges that are all too common and which promotes weed growth. I will not cut into your home's siding, fence posts, or trees when trimming.
Clean Up
After cutting and trimming the last thing to do is to use the blower to clean up any grass clippings and other debris that are on hard surfaces. If you want your deck blown off I will do that. I do not leave a mess in the street.
Irrigation
Too much water is almost as bad as no water at all. Watering daily will encourage a shallow root system as well as promote the growth of fungus. It is better to water less often but water deeply when you do. This will encourage a deeper root system which will help the lawn survive in the hot dry summer months.
Fertilization
The deep green colored lawns you see are most likely the result of a fertilizer program. The lushest lawns are treated up to 7 times per season. Fertilizing in the spring with a pre-emergent for crabgrass control, fertilizer with grub and insect control in the summer, and a high mineral content feeding in the fall would be the 3 basic treatments needed to maintain a healthy lawn. Broadleaf weeds can be spot treated as needed.
Aeration / Aeravation
Core aeration is the process of removing 1/2" wide and up to 3" deep plugs spaced about 6 inches apart. This allows water and oxygen to get to the root zone of the grass. Much more water is retained in an aerated lawn. I go one step above aeration and also offer aeravation. The aeravator makes holes deeper than an aerator, especially in hard soil, without leaving plugs everywhere. Aeravation relieves compaction, while fracturing the soil profile. This process breaks through the hard pan and allows oxygen, water, nutrients, and roots to penetrate deeper into the ground resulting in deep healthier grass. It also allows rain water to stay where it is needed rather than running off. It can help to eliminating standing water, puddles, and muddy areas due to poor drainage. For best long term results, a top dressing of sand can be done with aeravation.
